Holweck Groove Edges: Clarify Deburring Before Releasing the Drawing
For a Holweck component, resolve the condition of each critical edge in the released drawing instead of relying on a general deburring note. Separate explicitly shaped edges from edges whose exact shape is unspecified, and record who may approve a change. The checklist here is editorial purchasing guidance, not a replacement for the drawing standard.

Distinguish an edge condition from a specified chamfer
The public abstract of ISO 13715:2017 describes rules for indicating and dimensioning edges of undefined shape. It directs geometrically defined edges to the general dimensioning principles of ISO 129-1. This article does not reproduce the purchased standard or interpret its full symbol system.
Ask the drawing authority to decide whether an edge needs a defined radius or chamfer, an undefined-edge requirement under the selected standard, or an explicit exception. Do not turn a general instruction to remove burrs into permission to add the same chamfer everywhere.
Keep the channel definition under design control
Skovorodko’s Holweck study examines groove count and helix angle as variables in a numerical flow investigation. Its observations concern the modeled pump and stated conditions, not a general shop-floor deburring rule.
Use that distinction to separate manufacturing clarification from redesign. Ask the customer to mark channel mouths, groove flanks, intervening lands and transitions that must retain their released geometry. Refer any proposal to blend, shorten or reshape those features to the design authority rather than deriving permission from a research diagram.

Resolve a conflicting note before production
Consider an RFQ with a general deburring note and a separate detail defining a channel entrance. As a purchasing review step, ask for a marked-up conflict list and an approved instruction for that exact edge. Do not ask the supplier to choose between documents by appearance or by the date on an email.
NASA describes configuration change management as proposing, evaluating and incorporating approved changes, followed by verification of implementation. That principle supports a documented disposition; it does not make this article a NASA manufacturing requirement.
- Record the edge location, applicable drawing or model revision, and the person responsible for clarification.
- Ask the supplier to identify the access available for checking the specified edge and any area that cannot be assessed by the proposed method.
- Agree the acceptance evidence before work begins: identified locations, an approved assessment method, and any requested annotated photographs or dimensional records.
- If an edge has already been altered outside the approved definition, request a documented disposition before further blending or shipment.
Prepare the edge review package
Bring the controlled geometry, edge-zone map and unresolved questions to the quotation review. Treat any proposed edge change as a customer decision, not as an informal cosmetic improvement. Keep functional validation of the completed pump outside this document-level checklist.
