Thin-Wall Rotor Inspection: Define the Support and Restraint Setup
For a thin-wall aluminum rotor, ask the customer's technical reviewer to define the support and restraint condition for each required dimensional check. Document that condition separately from the machining setup. When supplier and receiving measurements differ, compare their approved setups before requesting a change to the part.

Separate holding for cutting from holding for checking
During a drawing review, use two separate questions: how will the part be held during manufacture, and in what condition will each specified feature be checked? Do not approve the machining fixture as the inspection setup merely because it already holds the component. Ask the technical reviewer which restraints, supports and contact locations belong to the agreed assessment.
Renishaw describes modular metrology fixtures as workpiece-holding arrangements built from plates, clamps and other components. It also describes documenting fixture setups for inspection programming.
For purchasing, the useful takeaway is to request a reproducible setup definition, not just a photograph of the part on a measuring table. The checklist below is original buyer guidance. It does not select a fixture, calculate clamping loads or establish a universal checking condition for rotor geometry.
Make the drawing authority explicit
ASME describes Y14.5 as establishing rules and conventions for expressing and interpreting geometric requirements in engineering drawings, digital models and related documents.
Name the governing drawing convention and released definition. Ask the responsible reviewer whether a characteristic must be assessed without an applied restraint, with a stated restraint or in another specifically defined setup. Use the wording approved for that project; do not add a free-state instruction merely because the part is thin.
Where the drawing leaves the support condition unresolved, record a clarification before order release. Ask the supplier to propose an approach for review, while retaining the customer's authority over acceptance. Keep any proposal distinct from the released requirement until its approval is documented.

Use one setup identifier for each approved arrangement. If different features require different arrangements, keep their records separate and cross-reference them to the drawing. Do not merge them under a single unqualified 'checked' entry.
Investigate the setup before prescribing rework
Suppose the supplier's record was produced with a named restraint, while a receiving check was made on a different support arrangement. Preserve both records and list the difference. Ask whether each check followed its governing instruction before deciding whether the discrepancy concerns the part, the method or incomplete documentation.
Do not ask a machinist to alter the rotor until the authorized reviewer has issued a disposition. Likewise, do not dismiss a receiving concern merely because the supplier supplied a report. Request the setup references, affected feature identifiers and a jointly understood comparison method. This is a document-and-decision sequence, not a diagnostic claim about the cause of a particular discrepancy.
Close the handoff with an approved setup record
Before dispatch, ask the supplier to associate the agreed setup identifier and revision with the required dimensional records. Give the receiving team the same approved instruction or clearly identify the agreed alternative. Assign ownership of unresolved support conditions before shipment rather than leaving them for an informal acceptance decision.
For quotation review, send the controlled drawing, the features requiring attention, existing support instructions and the records requested with delivery. Flag any unknown setup condition as an open question. Keep balancing, cleanliness and equipment qualification outside this dimensional-setup decision unless separately specified.
